Census -Years & Dates

Names on census returns are people who were present overnight on the date given for that year. Anyone away for the night for any reason would be registered at the address where they stayed.

Ships in ports were registered but not ships at sea.

Some people may not be found in specific years due to clerical errors- misspelling names, bad handwriting being misread, possible the person giving the information not having the correct information about people staying there- e.g., lodgers etc

So look for variations in spelling, or search for people not present with their name and approx date of birth.

With many thanks to Lesley Culshaw for this information.
